Independent Study Courses

To complete the free online Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Independent Study Courses required for the Community Emergency Response Team, you must first obtain a FEMA Student Identification (SID) number.  To do this, click here, select “Register for a FEMA SID”, and follow the instructions on the FEMA website.

Once you have secured a new FEMA SID, please take the following courses (links below are clickable) and forward the email containing your certificate to Bates County EMA Director Dennis Jacobs at ema480@batescomo.net:

IS-100.c  Introduction to the Incident Command System

IS-200.b  ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents

IS-317  Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams

IS-700.b  An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

IS-800.c  National Response Framework, an Introduction

TIP:  If you need to leave your computer in the middle of a lesson, don’t close the window.  If you close the window, you will have to begin from the start of the lesson when you return instead of where you left off.

Any volunteers who are interested in working in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during a large-scale emergency will require additional courses to attain NIMS compliance.  These courses include the following:

IS-230.d Fundamentals of Emergency Management

IS-235.c Emergency Planning

IS-240.b Leadership and Influence

IS-241.b Decision Making and Problem Solving

IS-242.b Effective Communication

IS-244.b Developing and Managing Volunteers

We welcome other businesses/agencies/groups/etc. to link to this page if these are courses you also need your employees/members to take.  We are providing this resource to assist everyone and encourage anyone who needs it to use it!
